Vintage Annals Archive Has A Bar Mitzvah!
13 years of outsiders, misfits, unconventional histories and underrepresented communities
The podcast is back for season 4, kicking off with Rich Wexler, founder of Vintage Annals Archive, an extremely popular archival project that began on Instagram that since has evolved and expanded into a podcast and digital photo archive focusing on outsiders and unconventional histories. Topics run the gamut from profiles on iconic photographer Jamel Shabazz, a sit down with comedian Julie Klausner, Philly bar mitzvah king Eddie Davis and the history of the song "Taste The Biscuit" by Toasters 'N' Moose, to deep dives on Pee-Wee Herman, Klaus Nomi, Grace Jones, and Marsha P. Johnson. (Seriously—there’s a lot to dig through).
“We focus here on people and histories considered to be the other or Outsider,” Wexler says. “Our focus is to explore the uniqueness and individuality of folks and topics thinking and working in non-traditional ways. We also present histories of the past as a roadmap in how to navigate the present. We present a unique form of interview, conversation, and storytelling in an organic manner and focus on art, culture, music, film, comedy, and more.”
This weekend, Wexler is celebrating the project’s 13th year by hosting a virtual bar mitzvah, a true coming-of-age event with an all-star cast headlined by legendary composer, lyricist and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) President and Chairman of the Board, Paul Williams. Kevin Allison of Risk, Dixie De La Tour of Bawdy Storytelling, Source Family archivist Isis Aquarian, photographer Julia Gorton, and more. On the latest Pipe Dreams podcast, Wexler shares the history of the project, his favorite interviews, and a glimpse at what to expect this weekend.
